What is nitrous oxide?
We know that dental visits can feel stressful for some patients, and nitrous oxide is a simple, safe, and effective way to help you feel calm and relaxed, especially during your treatment. Let's go over what it is, how it works, and what to expect. Nitrous oxide is a gas used in dentistry because it works very quickly and also leaves your system very quickly. We place a mask on you, you breathe in oxygen for a short time, and then we turn on the laughing gas, or nitrous oxide. It helps take the edge off your stress, making you feel more relaxed so we can proceed with your dental care. We leave it on for the duration of the visit. After the visit is complete, we turn it off, and within a couple of breaths, the nitrous oxide and all its effects are gone, and you can drive home as if nothing ever happened.
How do people react to nitrous oxide?
Different people react differently to nitrous oxide. Some people feel a little sleepy. Some people feel a little giddy, and others may even feel a little excited.
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Nitrous oxide is very safe. The reason it is considered very safe is because it acts quickly and also leaves your system very quickly. Within two breaths after it is turned off, the gas is completely out of your system.
How does nitrous oxide work?
It works by first giving you pure oxygen for a few minutes. Once that is done, we then turn on the nitrous oxide. We start at a low concentration and increase it slowly until you're comfortable. Then we leave it on during the procedure. When the appointment is complete, we turn the nitrous oxide off but leave the oxygen on for about 30 seconds to a minute, make sure you feel okay, and then turn the oxygen off so you are free to go on with your normal routine.
Who is a good candidate for nitrous oxide?
Just about everybody is a good candidate for nitrous oxide. There are certain lung conditions where you may not be able to receive nitrous oxide, such as emphysema or other chronic bronchial issues. Those are the main people who may not be candidates, but other than that, just about everyone is.
Can I drive myself home after nitrous oxide?
The good thing about nitrous oxide is that you can drive yourself to the appointment, and yes, you will be able to drive yourself back home safely.
What can I expect during my appointment with nitrous oxide?
What you can expect during your appointment with nitrous oxide is much the same as what you can expect without it, except that you will feel more relaxed and less tense. Keep in mind that nitrous oxide is not meant to make you unconscious, nor is it meant to make you sleepy. It is simply meant to take the edge off so you can get your needed dental treatment accomplished.
